In chapter 2, Pink discusses "knowledge workers" and how they shaped the world we live in. He also discusses the idea that only being rational, logical, and functional has become insufficient in today's world. Do you agree and how does this relate to secondary education in 2010?
According to Forrester Research, "at least 3.3 million white-collar jobs and $1.36 billion in wages will shift from the U.S. to low-cost countries like India, China, and Russia" by 2015 (Pink, 2005). How do statistics such as these shape your attitude and philosophy in regards to educating globally competitive students?
Pink believes that being only left brained is no longer sufficient in this "Conceptual Age". He writes, "we'll need to supplement our well-developed high-tech ablities with abilities that are high concept and high touch"(Pink, 2005). In your own words, how do we challenge our students to not only be high concept but to be high touch as well?
List examples of how you apply the "six senses" (design, story, symphony, empathy, play, and meaning) of the Conceptual Age in your classroom instruction. If there are any of these senses that you don't currently incorporate into your classroom, list some examples of how you could?
Having read A Whole New Mind in it's entirety, reflect on the "six senses" in regards to your classroom practices. Select one of the "six senses" that you most rarely incorporate into your everyday instruction. Create and teach a lesson which incorporates this sense. Discuss the results and effectiveness of incorporating a behavior that may not be commonplace in your classroom.
